A man has been charged after a major breakthrough in one of the state’s longest mysteries – the abduction and murder of toddler, Cheryl Grimmer, at Fairy Meadow Beach in Wollongong, 47 years ago.

Following continued investigations into the three-year-old’s disappearance by investigators attached to Strike Force Wessel and Wollongong Local Area Command, a 63-year-old man was arrested in Frankston in Melbourne about 1pm on Wednesday (22 March 2017).

The man faced Frankston Magistrates Court where police successfully sought the man’s extradition to New South Wales.

He arrived in New South Wales in police custody this afternoon and was taken to Wollongong Police Station.

He has been formally charged with murder and will appear in Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Friday 24 March 2017).
