A man allegedly attempting a carjacking in Haymarket overnight was trapped when the intended victim jumped out of his utility and locked it.
It was shortly after 5pm (Friday 11 March 2017), that a 46-year-old plumber was driving his ute along Pitt Street when, at the intersection of Hay Street, a man opened the passenger door and climbed in.
The man allegedly punched the driver to the face several times, demanding to be driven to Wagga Wagga.
Several passersby intervened and the driver got out of his vehicle, remotely-locking all doors and trapping the would-be carjacker inside.
A witness waved down several police officers who attempted to arrest the man. After one officer was also allegedly punched in the face, OC spray was used to effect the arrest.
The 39-year-old man was taken to Day Street police Station and has been charged with
• Aggravated assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle – inflict actual bodily harm
• Assault police
• Resist police.
The man, from Ashmont near Wagga Wagga, has been refused bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court later today (Saturday 11 March 2017).
The driver suffered facial injuries with two broken teeth and bruising.
