Escapee charged - Wollongong

A man who escaped custody on Thursday and was arrested after a stabbing incident in Wollongong yesterday has now been charged.

About 6pm on Thursday 2 March 2017, a man escaped police custody at Wollongong Hospital after being arrested by police earlier that day.

An extensive search was conducted by police from Wollongong Local Area Command and the Dog Squad but the man was not located.

About 3.40pm yesterday (Sunday 5 March 2017), police were called to Corrimal Street, Wollongong, following reports a man had been stabbed.

Police from Wollongong Local Area Command attended and found a 52-year-old man with stab wounds to his back and hands.

He was treated by emergency services and taken to Wollongong Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Following inquiries into the incident, police attended a home on Banks Street, Wollongong, when they saw a 43-year-old man leaving the location on foot. He was pursued by officers and was arrested nearby on Church Street.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with wound with intent to murder, escape police custody, destroy or damage property x 2, intimidate officer in execution of duty, assault officer in execution of duty, common assault x 2, possess prohibited drug, and enter building/land with firearm or imitation firearm.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Monday 6 March 2017).

A 29-year-old woman was also arrested at the scene and charged with conceal serious indictable offence. She was granted conditional bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 21 March 2017.
