Several assaulted at Charlestown, man charged

A man has been charged after he assaulted numerous people and police in an alcohol related incident in the Lake Macquarie region.

About 3.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 1 March 2017), a 24-year-old man left a licensed premises on Charlestown Road, Charlestown, when he began assaulting an unknown male who was walking past the location.

He then began assaulting another unknown male before turning his attention to a 43-year-old man who was seated in his vehicle which was stopped in traffic nearby.

He punched this man several times in the head before he was apprehended by several citizens and held until police arrived.

When police attended he resisted their efforts to control him and was subdued with OC spray.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station where he also allegedly assaulted another officer.

The man was charged with affray, resist arrest, common assault, and offensive language. He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Thursday 2 March 2017).

Police are urging the unknown assault victims to come forward to provide a statement.

None of the victims required medical treatment as a result of the alleged assaults.
